In this issue of the Promising Practices Forum we have bee asked to provide tips for including children with Disabilities in Physical Education. Designed for the all levels, these tips can help improve the overall success of children in PE classes.

10 Condensed Teaching Tips on How to Teach PE to students with Disabilities:

1.  Reduce the size of the playing area—for example:  in volleyball, add more players so there is less area for students to cover

2.  Change the size of the equipment—for example:  when playing volleyball, use a beach ball instead of a regulation volleyball

3.  Eliminate outs and/or strike outs when playing baseball or softball

4.  When playing baseball or softball, use a lighter ball (like a whiffleball) and use a larger bat.

5.  Adjust the time of the activities by providing frequent rest periods.

6.  When playing basketball, use a beeper ball and place a radio under the basket (for use with someone who has a visual impairment).

7.  If a student uses a wheelchair, allow them to hold a ball on his/her lap while pushing wheelchair.

8.  Use Velcro balls and mitts when playing baseball or softball.

9.  Modify the basic rules of any game—for example; have everyone sitting when playing a game of volleyball, or allow each person 3 chances to get their serve over the net in volleyball.

10.  Use specialized equipment, like a batting tee when playing baseball.
